Is Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Worth Visiting?
Yes, if seeing dozens of elephants together at close range is what you came to Sri Lanka for: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage holds the largest herd of captive elephants in the world, and you watch them bathe in the river twice a day. Go in with your eyes open, though — the elephants are captive, not wild, and at night the females are chained individually in their stalls. If that trade-off bothers you, Ridiyagama Safari Park on the south coast at least lets its animals range across open habitat rather than stalls.
What not to miss
Featured location Pinnawala Open Zoo Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka The orphanage claims the largest captive elephant herd in the world. In 2023 it held 71 elephants across three generations, 30 males and 41 females.Pinnawala has cared for elephants since 16 February 1975, and its herd has grown into the largest group of captive elephants anywhere: 65 animals in total. The two river-bathing sessions, from 9:15am to 11:45am and again from 2:15pm to 3:45pm, are the reason most people come — the whole herd is walked about half a kilometre down to the water to drink and bathe, in view of the public. A separate elephant-feeding programme begins at 9:15am each day, so the two overlap at the start of the morning session.
That scale is also the honest reason to think twice. The orphanage was the subject of a 2010 report from the Born Free Foundation that raised animal welfare concerns, and at night the females are chained individually in their stalls. Neither fact makes the visit not worth doing, but it is worth knowing before you decide.
Tickets and saving money
As of September 2026, a foreign adult ticket costs USD 17.70 and a foreign child's USD 8.85; local visitors pay Rs. 295 for an adult ticket. If you also want to see the neighbouring zoo, buy the combined ticket rather than two separate ones:
These tickets give you access to both the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and the Pinnawala Zoo, making your visit even more memorable.
Getting there and when to go
Pinnawala village sits in Kegalle District, about 90km from Colombo.
Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island. The southwest monsoon, which brings rain off the Indian Ocean to the island's southwestern side, runs from mid-May to October. The northeast monsoon, which instead soaks the island's northeast from the Bay of Bengal, runs December to March.

It opened to the public on 28 May 2016 on the south coast, in Hambantota District, and its first phase opened with a 35-acre African Lion Zone, a 54-acre Sri Lanka Elephant Zone and an 80-acre World Zone, within a park that covers about 500 acres in total. Rather than walking a fixed route past enclosures, you go through on a guided safari tour while lions, tigers, elephants, zebras and deer roam habitats built to size. A foreign adult ticket costs the same USD 17.70 as Pinnawala, with a foreign child's at USD 8.85 and a local adult ticket at Rs. 590, as of September 2026.
