Is Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan Worth It?
Yes, for most visitors. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan shows about 620 species and 30,000 animals around a Pacific Ocean tank where whale sharks swim.
What not to miss at Kaiyukan
The building works as one long descent. You ride an escalator up to the eighth floor through the Aqua Gate, a tunnel tank of tropical fish, then start in the Japan Forest and work your way down, as if diving, to the deep-sea animals of the Japan Deep tank.
The reason to pay is the Pacific Ocean tank: up to 34 metres long, 9 metres deep and holding 5,400 cubic metres of water, with whale sharks, manta rays and schools of Indian mackerel. In May 2025 Kaiyukan also began showing sand tiger sharks, a species it had never displayed before.
Featured location Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan 大阪市港区, Japan Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, opened in 1990, is an aquarium in 大阪市港区, Japan. Animals on show include ブルージェリー フィッシュ, アカシュモク ザメ, タカアシガニ, ホウボウ and カブトクラゲ.Two other recent changes are worth knowing. Since 2 August 2026 the Arctic Region area has held about 140 clione, sea angels around 2 cm long, collected in the Arctic. On the other side of the ledger, the Aleutian Islands tank closed on 9 April 2025 for work on the animals' environment, and Kaiyukan's exhibition page still lists it as closed for renovation.
The Jinbei Backyard ticket lets you look down into the Pacific Ocean tank from behind the scenes: ¥1,500 for about 20 minutes, or ¥2,500 for about 30 minutes including a feeding, on top of admission. From 7 September it may be suspended because of construction work and online sales have stopped; on days it runs, you buy on the day at the ticket counter or at the backyard venue.
Tickets and saving money
Kaiyukan sets prices by demand. Children aged 2 and under are free, and prices include tax. Check your date on the price calendar before you plan around it.
Your admission ticket also works as a discount coupon in Tempozan Marketplace next door.
Kaiyukan sells a combination ticket with the Captain Line shuttle boat, which links the aquarium and Universal City Port in about 10 minutes, so you can arrive or leave by water.
Check the web address before you pay: Kaiyukan has warned of a fake site, kaiyukan.world, posing as an official seller, which has mainly caught overseas visitors.
Which to choose: Kaiyukan, NIFREL or Tennoji Zoo
If Kaiyukan does not suit you, two other Osaka options are worth a look, and one comes from the same team.
NIFREL
NIFREL is produced by Kaiyukan and sits inside the EXPOCITY complex in Suita; its nearest station is Bampaku-kinen-koen on the Osaka Monorail. Admission is ¥2,400 for adults, ¥1,200 for primary and junior high pupils and ¥700 for children 3 and over, with under-3s free, as of September 2026. Unlike Kaiyukan, it allows same-day re-entry if you come back at least an hour before closing. It is open 10:00-18:00 with last admission at 17:00, though hours change with the season. A new Poison zone, opened on 18 March 2026, holds 33 species and 230 poisonous animals, among them fish, reptiles and amphibians, in 18 tanks.
Tennoji Zoo
Tennoji Zoo is the budget pick: ¥800 for adults, ¥200 for primary and junior high pupils and free for preschool children, as of September 2026. Its areas include an African Savanna zone, an Elephant Village, a reptile house and a Penguin Park and Sea Lion Wharf. It is open 9:30-17:00 with last admission at 16:00, and closes on Mondays (the next weekday when a Monday is a holiday). It is a 5-10 minute walk from Dobutsuen-mae or Ebisucho on the Osaka Metro, or from Shin-Imamiya on JR and Nankai.
Pick Kaiyukan if a whale shark in a 9-metre-deep tank is the point of the trip. Pick NIFREL for same-day re-entry from the Kaiyukan team, and Tennoji Zoo if its African Savanna zone and Penguin Park appeal more than tanks.
Wild deer in Nara
For wild animals rather than tanks, more than 1,200 wild sika deer roam Nara Park, protected as a natural treasure. The park is served by Kintetsu Nara Station, which you reach on the Kintetsu Line from Osaka-Namba. Our Japan page lists every other zoo and aquarium in the directory.
Getting there
The simplest route is the Osaka Metro Chuo Line to Osakako Station; from exit 1 it is about a 5-minute walk. Osaka City Bus route 88 from Osaka Station and route 60 from Namba stop right by the aquarium at Tempozan Harbor Village. Drivers can use the Tempozan car park under Kaiyukan and Tempozan Marketplace, which has about 1,000 spaces and is capped at ¥2,000 a day on weekdays and ¥2,500 at weekends and on holidays, as of September 2026.
Before you go in
Since 24 April 2026 suitcases are banned inside, and so is other large luggage whose three sides total 120 cm or more, or with one side over 70 cm, so leave them at your hotel or in a coin locker first.
With a pushchair or wheelchair
Most of the route is ramped, and staff guide wheelchair users by lift where needed. The baby care room on the second floor of the entrance building has a children's toilet, a nursing room, changing beds and a formula water dispenser.
