Valencia's Aquarium and its collection

Valencia's Aquarium, opened in 1975, is a zoo in Valencia, Venezuela.

The aquarium occupies the city's first waterworks building, known as the old water box, built in 1886 under Antonio Guzmán Blanco. It now keeps numerous fish and snake species as well as endemic plants.

History

Dr Juan Vicente Seijas inaugurated the first phase on 21 December 1975, having devised and carried out the project both while serving as president of the municipal council and afterwards. The aquarium held what were said to be the world's only trained freshwater dolphins, which died in June 2016.

Exhibits

The bird collection includes several macaw species, parakeets, harpy eagle and vultures. Reptiles include American and Orinoco crocodiles, spectacled caiman, anaconda, reticulated python and mata mata turtle. Mammals include river dolphin, capuchin monkey, cotton-top tamarin, coati, ocelots and puma.
