Parque Zoológico Caricuao and its collection

Parque Zoológico Caricuao, opened in 1974, is a zoo in Caracas, Venezuela.

It spans 630 hectares, of which 594 are set aside for wildlife, plants and the watershed.

History

Its origins lie in 1967, when the government of Raúl Leoni handed the lands of the Santa Cruz coffee estate to the Federal District; the park was created by decree number 1.682. It was first to be called Parque Zoológico Metropolitano, but in 1974 the national parks institute took over its management and changed the name. The doors opened to the public on 31 July 1977.
