Umgeni River Bird Park
Umgeni River Bird Park and its collection
Umgeni River Bird Park, opened in 1984, is a zoo in Bromhof, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
History
The park was designed and constructed by Dr Alan Abrey in a disused quarry and opened in April 1984, privately held by bird enthusiasts who wanted to teach the public about birds worldwide. Abrey managed it until his retirement in 1997. His daughter Robyn produced the guidebook illustrations and the park maps.
Exhibits
The landscaped former quarry has natural waterfalls and paths winding through three aviaries. A window into the nursery shows hatching and rearing.
Conservation and approach
Of the 24 threatened bird species held, 17 are bred on site. Wattled cranes, listed by the IUCN as vulnerable with roughly 8,000 left in the wild, are bred and released in partnership with the South Africa Crane Working Group, the chicks raised by means of a glove puppet before being freed in the Dullstroom area.
