Toledo Zoo and its collection

Toledo Zoo, opened in 1900, is a zoo in Toledo, United States.

The zoo keeps over 10,000 animals from 720 species. Its holdings have been described as one of the most varied zoo and aquarium collections in the country.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Amur leopard, African elephant, Lake sturgeon and Hellbenders.

Exhibits

A 12-acre Africa section opened on 1 May 2004. Arctic Encounter keeps grey wolves, two species of seal, sea lions and polar bears, while the opening room of the aviary holds demoiselle cranes, blue-throated macaws and southern pudu. A bald eagle exhibit and rescue sits on the north pedestrian ramp up to the bridge.

Conservation and approach

About 80 species survival programmes are run, and staff carry out most of their research overseas, joining field expeditions. Flagship projects cover the Aruba island rattlesnake, West Indian boas and the Kihansi spray toad, whose wild population had been declared extinct.
