Detroit Zoo — Zoo in Huntington Woods

WAZA WAZA-WP

Detroit Zoo and its collection

Detroit Zoological Society, opened in 1928, is a zoo in Royal Oak, Michigan, United States.

The zoo covers 125 acres and holds over 2,000 animals in more than 200 species. It was the first zoo in the country to use bar-less habitats.

History

The first version opened in 1883 at Michigan and Trumbull Avenues, facing Tiger Stadium. Its stock came from William Cameron Coup's circus, auctioned off after the company went broke in the city. The businessman Luther Beecher paid for the circus animals and put up a building he named the Detroit Zoological Garden.
