The Deep — Aquarium in Kingston upon Hull

BIAZA WAZA

The Deep and its collection

The Deep, opened in 2002, is an aquarium in Hull, United Kingdom.

The tanks hold 2,500,000 litres of water and 87 tonnes of salt. A schools programme takes 30,000 primary and secondary pupils annually, covering food chains, marine care, predator-prey relations, adaptations and habitats, and group sleepovers and special events are also run.

History

Sammy's Point, where the aquarium stands, was occupied by Hull Castle from the 16th century; the fortification was reconstructed as The Citadel in 1681, and the ground was later enlarged with spoil dug out for the Victoria Dock in 1850. Money from the Millennium Commission's lottery programme paid for the building, which Terry Farrell designed. It opened in March 2002.
