San Antonio Zoological Gardens & Aquarium and its collection

San Antonio Zoological Gardens & Aquarium, opened in 1914, is a zoo in San Antonio, United States.

Annual attendance tops a million. The on-site Richard Friedrich Aquarium dates from 1948 and was the city's only aquarium until SeaWorld arrived in 1988, while a miniature train ride has operated since 1956.

Animals and collection

More than 3,500 animals across 750 species are kept, some of them endangered or gone from the wild.

Conservation and approach

Its conservation and research centre breeds black rhinoceros, golden lion tamarin, dama gazelle, Komodo dragon, Andean condor and Attwater's prairie chicken away from public display. A further project breeds Texas horned lizards for release back into their native range.
