Austin Zoo

Austin Zoo and its collection

Austin Zoo, opened in 1990, is a zoo in Austin, United States.

It states a mission of rescue, conservation and education for animals in need. More than 300 animals of over 100 species are kept, among them African lions, Bengal tigers, cougars, black bears, three monkey species and ring-tailed lemurs.

History

The site began as a goat ranch and became the Good Day Ranch in 1990, taking in animals that needed homes. Early stock was mainly domestic and local: ponies, donkeys, fallow deer, pigs and goats. It was renamed in 1994 as the count of exotic animals grew.

Exhibits

The grounds are laid out in a circle, mixing exotic and native species. Aviaries between the bear and big cat areas hold grey and Amazon parrots, conures, cockatoos, macaws and lorikeets.
