Racine Zoological Gardens
Racine Zoological Gardens and its collection
Racine Zoo is a zoo in Racine, United States.
The collection covers over 100 species, weighted towards Wisconsin natives, and includes a building for the state's reptiles and amphibians. Some reptiles and amphibians are held off display for teaching use.
History
It dates from 1 March 1923, when Jacob Stoffel Jr, a businessman in the town, presented three monkeys; Island Park was chosen as the site of the modest zoo the city then created. Deer, badgers, gray foxes and Rocky Mountain goats had joined the collection before that first year was out. The site proved too small, and in 1925 the animals were moved to Goold and North Main streets.
Exhibits
The collection exceeds 100 species and leans towards Wisconsin natives, with one building given over to the state's reptiles and amphibians; further specimens of both are kept away from public view for teaching purposes. A playground, a children's zoo and a discovery centre with hands-on displays occupy the grounds. Band concerts are staged without charge on summer Sundays, alongside the Animal Crackers Jazz Series.
