Brookfield Zoo Chicago — Zoo in Brookfield
Brookfield Zoo Chicago and its collection
Brookfield Zoo, opened in 1921, is a zoo in Brookfield, Illinois, United States.
The zoo covers 216 acres and holds about 511 species, making it the largest in its metropolitan area. It opened on 1 July 1934 and became known for using moats and ditches in place of cages.
Animals and collection
It was the first zoo in the United States to show giant pandas; one of them, Su Lin, is now a mounted specimen at the Field Museum. A cockatoo named Cookie was in the collection from the 1934 opening until its death in 2016, and the Asian elephant Ziggy spent three decades chained in the Pachyderm House after attacking a keeper in 1941.
Conservation and approach
The zoo runs a conservation project at Punta San Juan in Peru. A $25,000 grant from Disney World helped society staff gain access to the restricted reserve there.
