Phoenix Zoo
Phoenix Zoo and its collection
The Phoenix Zoo, opened in 1962, is a zoo in Phoenix, Arizona, United States.
More than 1,400 animals are kept along 2.5 miles of paths. The zoo carries the Phoenix Point of Pride designation.
History
It grew from an initiative by Robert Maytag and the Arizona Zoological Society, now the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation. Maytag died months ahead of the opening on 21 November 1962, which went ahead as planned. It was first called the Maytag Zoo and was renamed a year later to reflect closer local ties.
Exhibits
The grounds are laid out as four trails: Arizona, Africa, Tropics and Children's, the last of these with a petting zoo. The caretaker's house of the Hunt Bass Hatchery, which stands on the grounds, dates from 1935.
Things to do
Things to do include Leapin’ Lagoon and Yakulla Caverns.
Conservation and approach
Conservation has been a stated priority since the zoo opened in 1962, and breeding for release covers Arabian oryx, black-footed ferrets, Mexican wolves, Ramsey Canyon leopard frogs and thick-billed parrots. It also provides sanctuary for non-breeding animals and carries out rescue work, such as treating lead-poisoned California condors.
