Gulf Breeze Zoo

Gulf Breeze Zoo and its collection

Gulf Breeze Zoo, opened in 1978, is a zoo in Gulf Breeze, United States.

The site divides into 20 acres of walkable exhibits and a 30-acre free-roaming area toured by guided train. More than 900 exotic animals are kept, orangutans, gorillas, hippos and rhinos among them. The zoo backs breeding in captivity as well as wildlife and habitat conservation schemes.

History

The operation began on a single acre on Burgess Road, then moved to a bigger site at Cantonment. Four local businessmen set up the present site in 1984, with the founder Pat Quinn as its first director. It opened with roughly 60 animals across 19 acres.

Exhibits

The walkable section holds Galapagos tortoises, red kangaroos, clouded leopards, tigers, lions and black bears. The bird collection includes flamingos, peafowl, macaws, king vultures, a kookaburra, ostriches and toucans. Certain animals, giraffes included, can be hand-fed.
