Cleveland Metroparks Zoo — Zoo in Cuyahoga County
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and its collection
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, opened in 1882, is a zoo in Cleveland, United States.
The zoo belongs to the Cleveland Metroparks system. It holds one of the largest primate collections in North America, including golden-bellied mangabeys, which are shown at only twelve zoos.
History
The zoo first opened in 1882 under an earlier name at Wade Park, on the site now occupied by the art museum, and early on it kept only animals of local origin. The city moved it to Old Brooklyn in 1907, the year it acquired its first elephant. The primate and cat building opened in 1975.
Exhibits
The RainForest opened in 1992 and ranks among the most popular areas, while Australian Adventure covers eight acres styled after the outback. Wilderness Trek keeps cold-climate species outdoors all year, among them Siberian tigers, grizzly bears, tufted deer, reindeer, American bison and red-crowned cranes. The shallows of Waterfowl Lake hold Chilean flamingos, black swan, canvasbacks and trumpeter swans, and Susie's Bear Hollow is the newest of the areas.
