Akron Zoological Park
Akron Zoological Park and its collection
Akron Zoological Park, opened in 1953, is a zoo in Akron, United States.
Of a 77-acre holding, 35 acres carry the habitats, facilities and support buildings. More than 1,000 animals of over 100 species are kept, and roughly 400,000 people visit each year. It is the busiest attraction in its county.
History
George and Ann Perkins gave the city 79 acres in 1900 on condition that the land remain public parkland for children's recreation. A natural history museum was incorporated in 1950, and a children's zoo followed alongside it in 1953.
Exhibits
A welcome building put up in 2003 holds ticketing, retail space and offices. A penguin exhibit opened in the same year, just beyond the entrance.
Conservation and approach
Membership of the AZA brings participation in breeding schemes for endangered species. The Venezuelan Waterfowl Foundation grew out of staff collaboration with conservationists in Venezuela and works on Andean river systems, including study of the torrent duck.
