Banham Zoological Gardens and its collection

Banham Zoo, opened in 1968, is a zoo in Banham, Norfolk, East of England, United Kingdom.

Over 2,000 animals were reported in 2024, and annual attendance exceeds 200,000, the zoo having been named Norfolk's top attraction on repeated occasions. It is owned by the Zoological Society of East Anglia, which also holds Africa Alive near Lowestoft.

History

It started as a pheasant and parrot collection and opened to visitors in 1968. A woolly monkey colony was taken in during 1971, after which it traded under a woolly monkey sanctuary name. It became a charity in 2013.

Animals and collection

It was the first collection in Britain to breed silvery woolly monkeys and retains a strong small-monkey collection. The bird collection includes hooded and white-backed vultures, several owl species, macaws, turacos and Bali mynas.

Exhibits

A snow leopard exhibit with rock faces and a stream opened in 2009, and three cubs were born there in 2010. The Giraffe House opened in 2008 for the fortieth anniversary and has produced several births.
