Anglesey Sea Zoo — Zoo & Aquarium in Brynsiencyn

Anglesey Sea Zoo and its collection

Anglesey Sea Zoo, opened in 1983, is a zoo in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, United Kingdom.

Claiming to be the largest aquarium in Wales, it shows over 150 native species and sits just outside Brynsiencyn. Attractions include a conger eel, a shark pool and a kelp forest, along with the Lobster Hatchery of Wales.

History

David and Alison Lea-Wilson opened it in 1983, having run a lobster wholesale business in which the tanks drew interest of their own accord; they later started the neighbouring Halen Môn sea salt firm. In 2007 it was sold to research ecologists, who added research and community conservation work.

Animals and collection

Two seahorse species are kept: the short-snouted, from UK and Mediterranean waters, and the drab, from the Red Sea.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include No Bone Zone, wolf fish lair and kelp forest.

Things to do

Things to do include Seahorse Breeding Programme, Lobster Hatchery of Wales and Crawfish Research Programme.

Conservation and approach

It is one of few sites worldwide to breed and sustain the native short-snouted seahorse. Its marine rescue centre grew out of a striped dolphin stranding in 1995 and now takes in seals, turtles, porpoises, whales and seabirds.
