Alexandria Zoological Park, opened in 1926, is a zoo in Alexandria, United States.

History

It started in 1926 as a line of cages at Bringhurst Park, and photographs from the early 1930s show chain link and iron bar cages with almost no planting. Only the original fish pools survive from that period, now used by wildfowl. A closure threat from the USDA in the 1960s prompted the city to form the committee now called Friends of the Alexandria Zoo.

Exhibits

Part of the African Experience opened in September 2003 with a naturalistic lion habitat featuring rockwork, a waterfall, dwarf crocodiles and porcupines. Two further exhibits in that zone opened in April 2004.

Conservation and approach

The zoo takes part in some 20 Species Survival Plans, covering red wolf, maned wolf, golden lion tamarin, clouded leopard and others. Other threatened residents include Galapagos tortoise, Bengal tiger, lowland anoa, Brazilian tapir and Palawan peacock pheasant.
