The Best Zoos in Hungary

How this list is ordered: by how complete our listing is — how much we hold on opening hours, ticket prices, accreditation, photographs, animals and facilities. It is a measure of our own coverage, not a judgement of the venue. We hold no visitor scores or conservation assessments, so “best” here means every zoo in Hungary that qualifies for the list, fullest entry first.

Listed alphabetically

  1. Night and evening opening

    Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden

    Zoo in Budapest

The garden covers 18.4 hectares in the Városliget at Állatkerti körút 6-12, and has been protected as a nature conservation area since 1986. From its opening in 1866 until the 1950s it was the only such institution in the country, before provincial zoos began. Its main activities are conservation, teaching, outdoor recreation and scientific research, and it draws 1 to 1.1 million visitors a year.

  2. Keeper talk or showEducation programOn-site dining

    Szeged Zoo

    Zoo in Szeged

The zoo specialises in keeping rare and threatened species, and its section for South American animals is the part most often singled out.

  3. Zoo Győr

    Zoo in Győr

The zoo set out at first to show native fauna, but the collection now covers every continent. African animals make up a notably large share of it.

  4. Zoo Gyöngyös

    Zoo in Gyöngyös

The site lies where the town's western bypass meets the Szurdokpüspöki road, with a side road to Gyöngyösoroszi branching off. It started as a game park and gained zoo status as its species and facilities grew. A male lion is among the animals kept.

Our ranking methodology

This is not a ranking. The 5 venues above are listed alphabetically by name, the same order used throughout this site. We do not collect visitor reviews, star ratings, ticket-sales figures or a conservation-impact score, so none of those exist here to rank by — “best” in this page’s title means every venue that qualifies for this list, not first-to-last by quality. If we ever add a data source robust enough to support an honest ranking, this note and the order above will change together.
