Kansas City Zoo Aquarium vs SEA LIFE: Which Should You Visit?
For most visitors in Kansas City, the aquarium at the Kansas City Zoo is the better pick: Sobela Ocean Aquarium holds 650,000 gallons against 260,000 at SEA LIFE Kansas City Aquarium, and entry comes with a zoo ticket of $22-24 online, as of September 2026. Choose SEA LIFE instead when you have about an hour downtown, no car, or children who want to pair it with LEGOLAND Discovery Center on a combo ticket.
Which venue to choose
One is an aquarium inside a large zoo in Swope Park; the other is a smaller aquarium at Crown Center that the average family sees in about an hour.
Sobela Ocean Aquarium at the Kansas City Zoo
Featured location Kansas City Zoo Kansas City, United States AZAWAZAWAZA-WP Close to 1,700 animals are kept at the zoo, with roughly 8,000 more in the aquarium. A Friends of the Zoo scheme is run, and attendance passes a million visitors a year. The zoo's $77 million aquarium opened to the public in 2023, after more than ten years of planning. It holds 650,000 gallons in 34 habitats, with about 8,000 animals, and at its opening it housed 200 species. The 362,262-gallon warm reef tank in zone 3 passes overhead. The aquarium's first residents were four sand tiger sharks and a brown shark, moved from the Georgia Aquarium. In the cold shallows, a giant Pacific octopus shares space with lobster, leopard sharks and a moray eel, and two rescued sea otters, Owin and Matti, are named after sea otter conservationists.
The aquarium stands near Helzberg Penguin Plaza, a short walk from the front entrance, and it is open year-round. Entry is included with zoo admission and with Friends of the Zoo memberships.
The catch is that you are paying for a whole zoo, and the zoo is big:
With 202 acres to explore at the Zoo, you'll be on your feet most of the day.
The newest reason to stay is Giraffe Crossing, a plaza and barn project costing nearly $22 million that the zoo unveiled in May 2026. You can see the giraffes year-round and feed them at stations inside the barn and outside on the savanna.
SEA LIFE Kansas City at Crown Center
SEA LIFE is an interactive aquarium at Crown Center, owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments. It holds 260,000 gallons and about 5,000 creatures, with a 180-degree underwater tunnel, sharks and more than 12 exhibits. Look for its rescued sea turtles, KC, Gertrude and Lou. Your ticket includes the touchpool, a children's play area, and as many talks and feeding demonstrations as you like.
The average family spends 45-60 minutes here, so it suits a short downtown stop, or small children who will not last through 202 acres.
So which one?
Pick the zoo aquarium if you have most of a day and want the bigger tanks, the sea otters and the octopus, plus giraffes and the rest of the zoo on the same ticket. Pick SEA LIFE if you are staying downtown without a car, have an hour to fill, or are planning a Crown Center day with LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Both are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Tickets and saving money
Prices were checked in September 2026.
- Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium: $22-24 online and $25-28 at the gate, with Sobela Ocean Aquarium included. Children aged 2 and under are always free. Residents of Jackson and Clay counties pay $11-12 online or $12.50-14 at the gate, with ZIP code validation. Rides cost extra: a $9 Gold wristband gives unlimited rides on the zoo railroad, the African Tram and the Endangered Species Carousel.
- SEA LIFE Kansas City: online from $19 per adult, with children's tickets in a 50% off sale from $9.50. A combo ticket with LEGOLAND Discovery Center starts from $29.99 per person, or $34.99 bought on the day. A new annual pass costs $59 per person, and a renewal $39. SEA LIFE is cashless, but you can turn cash into a gift card at Crown Center guest services.
If you live in Jackson or Clay county, the Postcard to Adventure program gives you four free zoo days a year, and because the aquarium comes with zoo admission, those days cover it too. At SEA LIFE, the savings follow your job and the calendar: healthcare professionals get in free through September 2026, first responders through October and military members through November, each with 30% off for friends and family. If you hold a membership at another AZA institution in the reciprocal program, SEA LIFE gives you 50% off at the walk-up desk.
Getting there
- Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium: in historic Swope Park, with easy access from I-435 and 71 Highway. Parking is always free. Without a car, the #18 Indiana bus stops at the south shelter in the Red parking lot seven days a week during opening hours. Once inside, the African Tram runs daily from the station near the front entrance to Elephant Expedition and African Market and back, which saves your legs.
- SEA LIFE Kansas City: 2475 Grand Blvd, Suite 100. The downtown streetcar is free: ride it south toward Union Station, get off there and walk the short way over. Drivers get up to five hours of free parking in the retail garage, entered from Grand Boulevard just south of the main entrance to the Crown Center Shops. Pick up your validation slip at admissions when you go in.
Best time to visit
From March to October the zoo opens 9:30am-4pm on weekdays and 9:30am-5pm on weekends; from November to February it opens daily from 9:30am to 4pm. It closes on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Kansas City summers are hot and humid, and rain picks up in late spring and summer. On a summer visit to the zoo, arrive at 9:30am, walk the outdoor areas first and save Sobela Ocean Aquarium for the heat of the day. In winter the zoo still makes sense, because the aquarium and Giraffe Crossing both stay open year-round. SEA LIFE limits how many people can be inside at one time, so reserve online if your day is fixed.
With kids and accessibility
At the zoo you can rent a wheelchair for $12, a double stroller for $11 or an electric convenience vehicle for $28. There are universal changing tables inside Sobela Ocean Aquarium and at the Elephant Expedition restrooms, and family restrooms with toddler seats around the zoo. Guest Relations lends sensory bags with noise-canceling headphones, and weighted blankets.
SEA LIFE is fully accessible for wheelchair users, but it rents neither wheelchairs nor strollers, so bring your own stroller. Crown Center Guest Services rents wheelchairs on a first-come, first-served basis, and SEA LIFE offers a discounted ADA carer ticket for someone accompanying a visitor who needs help. LEGOLAND Discovery Center suits children aged 3-10, and adults may only enter with a child aged 17 or under.
