Yes -- the one zoo this directory lists in Tunisia is Parc du Belvédère, inside the public park of the same name in Tunis. It holds 155 animal species across 13 hectares, closed for a month in spring 2026 for a renovation, and reopened in late May in a new configuration.

What not to miss

Featured location Parc du Belvédère تونس, Tunisia The park dates from the close of the 19th century and lies in the north of the city. Circulation is split between carriage roads, bridle paths and footpaths.

The zoo dates to 1963-1969, when landscape architects from Cologne added it to a park whose own history goes back further: Parc du Belvédère itself was begun in 1892, designed by the landscape architect Joseph Laforcade. Wikipedia's species list for the zoo runs from the Rhesus macaque, brown bear, Bengal tiger, lion and dromedary at one end to the white rhinoceros, African leopard, Grant's zebra and the hippopotamus at the other, across its 155 species in total.

The zoo's biggest story of the past year wasn't an opening but a loss. An elephant named Baby had her condition worsen one Wednesday morning in late January 2026 and died early that afternoon. Tunis's municipal health director, Omar Naifer, denied any negligence by the veterinary team or the municipality. Within weeks the city had announced a wider modernisation of the zoo: a new, more spacious enclosure for the lions, extended space for the cats and monkeys with added play structures for the primates, a wooden bridge built around the crocodile area for a safer, better view, and new internal pathways to ease circulation around the park. The zoo closed from 13 April to 14 May 2026 to carry the work out, then reopened on Saturday 30 May at 11am, timed to follow the Aid al-Adha holiday -- so if you visit now, you're seeing it in its newest form yet.

Tickets and saving money

As of April 2025, entry cost 1.5 dinars for children and 2 dinars for adults, and the municipality said ahead of the 2026 closure that prices wouldn't change once the renovation was finished. That same April, unofficial resellers outside the gates were charging 5 dinars or more for tickets, more than double the counter price. Eid al-Fitr is the reason: many Tunisian families dress their children up for photos and bring them to see the animals that day, and the park recorded 9,000 visits on Eid in 2025 -- part of the record attendance the zoo sees there every year. Buy at the zoo itself, and avoid Eid day if you'd rather skip the queues where the scalpers work.

Getting there

The park's shaded main entrance is at Place Pasteur.
