Zoo León and its collection

Zoo León, opened in 1979, is a zoo in León, Mexico.

History

It opened in September 1979 and has been municipally owned and run since 1989. A veterinary clinic was gained in 1994 and a Night Safari in 2002. A paid temporary show on reptiles and venomous arthropods was staged in 2010.

Animals and collection

Over 1,100 animals of 180 species are held, seven of them kept nowhere else in the country: warthog, Amur leopard, flying fox, mongoose lemur, Kamchatka bear, sloth bear and raccoon dog. The raptor aviary, claimed as the world's biggest, holds eagles, hawks, caracara, vultures, owls and falcons.

Things to do include Safari tour, Zoona Mito train ride and Uncle Buffalo's cabin.

Conservation and approach

The endangered horned guan has been bred since roughly 2004, as has the Mexican gray wolf, a species no longer found in the wild. Several macaw species are kept and bred, the scarlet macaw among them.
