Zoo Atlanta
Zoo Atlanta and its collection
Zoo Atlanta, opened in 1889, is a zoo in Atlanta, United States.
History
Its origins lie in 1889, when the businessman George V. Gress bought the animals of a collapsed travelling circus and presented them to the city. Officials placed them in Grant Park, where the zoo remains. Camels, monkeys, lionesses, a hog, a gazelle, a hyena, a jaguar, a raccoon and a black bear were among that first group.
Animals and collection
Animals on show include elephant, vulture, gorilla and Orangutans.
Things to do
Things to do include Endangered Species Carousel, Keeper Talks, NightCrawler Overnight and Wild Encounters.
Conservation and approach
The stated mission couples saving wildlife and habitat with conservation, research, education and visitor experience. Conservation funding has reached giant panda, African elephant, golden lion tamarin, western lowland gorilla and Panamanian golden frog among others, and extends to local reptiles such as eastern indigo snake and diamondback terrapin, and to African vultures.
