Zoo Aquarium de Madrid, opened in 1972, is a mixed in Moncloa-Aravaca – Madrid, Madrid, Spain.
History
Madrid's first zoo was the Casa de Fieras del Retiro, set up by Carlos III in 1770. The present zoo was promoted by Antonio Lleó de la Viña, who built it in the Casa de Campo; the Catalan architect Jordi Mir Valls won the design competition and handled the initial project.
Animals and collection
Breeding covers giant panda, western lowland gorilla, giant anteater, Sumatran elephant, grey seal, Bornean orangutan and koalas. In 2007/2008 the zoo took part in 30 EEP and 21 ESB programmes run by EAZA.
