Tbilisi Zoo and its collection

Tbilisi Zoo, opened in 1927, is a zoo in თბილისი, Georgia.

The zoo occupies part of the Vere River valley in the city centre. Before the 2015 flood it covered about 120 hectares and kept roughly 300 species, both Caucasian and foreign.

History

A city council decision of 10 February 1927 created it, to a design drawn up by Georgian and Russian specialists, with further enlargement following in the 1930s. It was organised at first into four departments covering local Caucasian fauna, Soviet fauna, exotic species and farm animals, and at its peak in the 1970s kept over 1,000 animals and drew more than half a million people a year. A flood on 14 June 2015 killed many animals and allowed others to escape.
