Sunshine Aquarium and its collection
Sunshine Aquarium is an aquarium in 豊島区, Japan.
Opened in October 1978, it occupies upper storeys and the roof of Sunshine City's World Import Mart building, and holds around 750 species and 37,000 fish across roughly 80 tanks. Its rooftop setting limits the scale of any renovation and leaves it with less floor space than most aquariums, a constraint addressed with a full closure and rebuild between September 2010 and August 2011. Displays range from the Sunshine Coral Reef, Japan's first permanent coral reef reproduction, which keeps a great white pelican, Baikal seal and zebra shark, to newer additions such as the Marine Garden's rooftop penguin and otter areas added in 2017 and the Kurage Kuukan jellyfish exhibit introduced in 2020.
History
It opened in October 1978 and shut for a year from 1 September 2010 for a complete rebuild, reopening on 4 August 2011. The outdoor Marine Garden area reopened on 12 July 2017. The female Russian sea otter Mir died of lymphoma on 7 January 2016, and the male otter Royce, brought from Adventure World to breed, went to Toba Aquarium, ending three decades of otter display.

What the venue says
- Visitors can use the expansive 24-hour Sunshine City multi-level parking garage (Sunshine Parking), which features roughly 1,800 spaces. Standard rates are around ¥400 per 30 minutes, and paid aquarium admissions totaling ¥2,000 or more qualify for a 1-hour free parking service if you present your parking ticket at the aquarium exit counter.
