Sequoia Park Zoo and its collection

Sequoia Park Zoo, opened in 1907, is a zoo in Eureka, United States.

It forms part of a wider park with 60 acres of second-growth coast redwoods, Eureka's biggest playground and a duck pond. Formal and natural gardens on the site hold many varieties of rhododendron.

History

Founded in 1907, it is described as California's oldest zoo. It stands on Wiyot land; the tribe is federally recognised, has over 600 members and has lived on Humboldt Bay for millennia. Chimpanzees were kept in the past, one of them living here for fifty years and dying at 62.

Animals and collection

The primates on show take in white-handed gibbons and spider monkeys of both the brown-headed and the black-headed kind. One gibbon, Joh-leen, died of old age in 2019, after which her mate Bono was moved in February 2020 to the Santa Barbara Zoo to be paired with a widowed female; chimpanzees were formerly held too, one of them living here for fifty years and dying at 62.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Redwood Sky Walk, Barnyard, Contact Corral and Hilfiker Aviary.
