Parque Lecocq — Zoo in Municipality A

Parque Lecocq and its collection

Parque Lecocq is a zoo in Uruguay.

The park covers 120 hectares next to the protected Santa Lucía wetlands. It belongs to the Montevideo city government and forms part of its protected parks unit. It lies about 19.5 km from the city centre, in a rural rather than urban part of the department.

History

It grew out of a scheme by the architect Mario Paysée, whose idea was to gather animals from across the world in natural-looking settings. The land had belonged to Francisco Lecocq, who devised chilled meat transport with Charles Tellier. On his estate Lecocq trialled vines, trees, imported plants and pedigree stock, and reared silkworms.
