Paris Zoological Park and its collection

Paris Zoological Park, opened in 1934, is a zoo in Paris, France.

The purpose is the study of animal behaviour in captivity and the breeding of threatened species for release back in their native ranges. The 65-metre artificial rock drew notice from the start and later entered the park's logo.

History

In 1860 the museum's director, Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, urged the creation of an annexe to the menagerie for the study of behaviour. The botanist Gabriel Thouin, and later the zoologist Edmond Perrier, weighed two possible locations for the extension: land by the wine halls, and the Jardin d'acclimatation, whose concession required that the animals be mostly domestic 'useful' ones. The park was designed in 1934 to supplement the menagerie at the Jardin des plantes.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Vipère aspic, Suricate, Loup ibérique, Grand hapalémur and Zèbre de Grévy.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include Biozone Patagonie, Biozone Afrique, Grande Volière africaine, Biozone Europe and Biozone Amazonie.

• L’exonération des droits d’entrée est accordée à chaque membre et son accompagnateur, cependant l’acquittement d’un tarif forfaitaire de 15€ par groupe (de 10 à 20 personnes accompagnateurs compris) est obligatoire.
