Oregon Coast Aquarium and its collection
Oregon Coast Aquarium, opened in 1992, is a zoo in Newport, United States.
It opened in 1992 on 23 acres beside the bay, close to the ocean. The main building carries five standing displays along with a changing gallery.
History
Local business figures floated the idea in the early 1980s, proposing a $7 million building in 1982 to lift the economy, and plans for a 23-acre bayside site were settled in 1990. The design was by SRG Architects of Portland, with BIOS:Inc of Seattle and the landscape architects Walker/Macy. The orca Keiko, of Free Willy, was housed there from 7 January 1996 until 9 September 1998, when he went to Iceland.
Exhibits
The largest display occupies the tank once used by Keiko, with walk-through acrylic tubes passing among sharks, rays and rockfish. An outdoor seabird aviary, claimed as the largest on the continent, holds tufted and horned puffins, oystercatchers, murres, auklets and guillemots. A nature play area features log models nodding to local timber history, a replica eagle nest and a river-chute slide.

- There is a **large, free on-site parking lot** directly outside the aquarium with designated accessible spots.
