National Reptile Zoo and its collection
National Reptile Zoo is a zoo in Kilkenny.
The zoo keeps 120 animals drawn from more than 50 species, spanning reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. A night room runs an inverted light cycle so that nocturnal species can be seen awake.
History
James Hennessy built the zoo, leasing a farm shed of 2,000 square metres and constructing the first enclosures himself. It was originally called Reptile Village, and the premises had grown to 6,000 square metres by 2015. A fire in April 2019 killed a snake and injured other animals.
Animals and collection
The collection covers crocodiles, pythons, large monitors, geckos, dart frogs and tarantulas.
