National Aquarium of New Zealand and its collection

National Aquarium of New Zealand, opened in 1957, is an aquarium in Napier, New Zealand.

Alongside its fish, the collection includes kiwi, tuatara, turtles, little penguins and lizards. Two halls hold changing displays, one upstairs and the other beside the oceanarium, and there is also a gift shop and a cafe.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Little Penguin, Kiwi and Terrapin.

Exhibits

Displays include a hawksbill turtle, seahorses, eels and a rocky shore section, together with the oceanarium.

Things to do include Little Penguin Close Encounter, Terrapin Close Encounter, Native Icons Guided Tour and Scales & Tails Feeding Tour.

• The Aquarium has free off-street parking for cars, charter buses and tour coaches. Accessible car parking is also available right outside.
• We have two accessible parking spaces located at the front of the Aquarium building, close to the main entrance.
• We have joined the Hāpai Access Card scheme as part of our ongoing commitment to providing an excellent customer experience for disabled people visiting.
• The Aquarium is wheelchair accessible with a lift to level one in the main foyer (there are only two levels).
• The Aquarium building allows the entry of Disability Assist Dogs for those requiring essential assistance.
• Accessible toilets are located at ground level in the café and retail space, and inside the Our Oceans education area.
