Naples Zoo and its collection

Naples Zoo, opened in 1969, is a zoo in Naples, United States.

The layout is a single mile-long loop threading through the botanical gardens.

History

The botanist Henry Nehrling bought the land in 1919 to shelter plants damaged by a 1917 freeze elsewhere in the state, and after his death in 1929 the gardens lay neglected for more than twenty years. Julius Fleischmann added plantings, lakes, a pathway, parrots and waterfowl, opening the site as Caribbean Gardens in 1954. Exotic animals arrived in 1969 under Larry and Jane Tetzlaff, following Fleischmann's death the previous year.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Lion, Giraffe, Cheetah, Malayan Tiger and Bornean Orangutan.

Exhibits

Alligator Bay holds American alligators, and the same lake hosts native species along with a yearly heron rookery.

Things to do

Things to do include Wild Encounters, Primate Expedition Cruise, Guided Tour and giraffe feeding station.

Wild Encounters
The temporary hours apply to all areas of the Zoo and botanical garden, including animal habitats, the playground, gift shop, Café Roar and Lakeside Café.
Visitors benefit from ample, free on-site parking directly at the facility.

Opening hours

Hours can change on public holidays. Check with the venue before travelling.

Beginning Saturday, August 15, Naples Zoo will open one hour earlier at 8:00 a.m. daily and close at 3:00 p.m. Last general admission will be at 2:00 p.m., with member admission available until 2:30 p.m. The adjusted hours will remain in effect through September 30, with regular operating hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. resuming October 1.
