Montréal Biodôme and its collection

Biodôme de Montréal, opened in 1976, is a zoo in Montréal, Canada.

Only two large sealed-ecosystem buildings exist in the western half of the globe; Biosphere 2, in Arizona, is the other. It was conceived as a museum, though, rather than as a genuinely closed ecological system. The indoor recreations range from a South American rainforest, in a gallery named for Aisha Savoie-Weider after a family donation, to a Quebec maple wood, the Saint Lawrence gulf estuary and a stretch of Labrador coast.

History

The building came from Roger Taillibert, the French architect responsible for the wider Olympic park. It began life as a venue housing both a velodrome and judo. Work started in August 1973 and the doors opened in April 1976.

Exhibits

A recreation of South American rainforest occupies a gallery named for Aisha Savoie-Weider following a family donation. Another exhibit copies a Quebec maple forest of mixed deciduous and coniferous trees, and a largely aquatic habitat reproduces the Saint Lawrence gulf estuary. The Labrador coast landscape carries only two bird species, murre and puffin.
