Magnetic Hill Zoo and its collection

Magnetic Hill Zoo, opened in 1953, is a zoo in Moncton, Canada.

Counted as the largest zoo in Atlantic Canada, it has been accredited by CAZA since 1993 and was placed fourth in a 2008 ranking of the country's ten best zoos. The wider site also holds the Magnetic Hill, Magic Mountain and Wharf Village.

History

It began in 1953 as the Magnetic Hill Game Farm, taking in orphaned and injured native animals such as owls, bears and deer. The city took the park over in 1979 and started buying exotics, which prompted the rename.

Animals and collection

Over 400 animals are kept, covering more than 70 domestic and exotic species of bird, mammal, insect, reptile and fish.

Exhibits

The grounds are laid out in four areas: Africa, Asia, the Americas and a Discovery Zone given over mainly to domestic animals.
