Lee Richardson Zoo and its collection
Lee Richardson Zoo is a zoo in Garden City, United States.
Over 80 species are kept on 47 acres within the park, many of them not native to the region. Entry on foot is free, while cars pay $20.
History
George Finnup's gift of 105 acres to the city provided the park around it. The city and the Izaak Walton League's local chapter founded the zoo in 1927, its first animals being two skunks; Lee Richardson, whose name it bears, was at that time chief of police and of parks, and served as founder and superintendent. The Marie Osterbuhr Aviary was added in 1985.
Exhibits
The North American Plains area covers river otters, burrowing owls, desert bighorn sheep, elk and bison, while the South American Pampas holds maned wolf, anteater, alpaca and rhea, with flamingos alongside. The Marie Osterbuhr Aviary dates from 1985.
