Hobart Zoo and its collection

Hobart Zoo, opened in 1895, is a zoo in Hobart, Australia.

The site lies close to the Governor's residence and the botanical gardens, laid out among sweeping gardens with wide views over the River Derwent.

History

First called Beaumaris Zoo, it opened in 1895 at the home of the socialite Mary Grant Roberts, who held and ran it for 26 years until her death in 1921. It ran a Tasmanian devil breeding programme and helped change public and scientific attitudes to native species. The land later became mainly a city council depot, though some remnants and archaeological traces remain visible.
