Dakota Zoo
Dakota Zoo and its collection
Dakota Zoo, opened in 1961, is a zoo in Bismarck, United States.
History
The founding farm first boarded dogs, cats and horses, and at one stage raised mink commercially. Neighbours took to leaving strays and injured animals with the Christiansons, and crowds came to look.
Animals and collection
Hoofed stock is kept in open paddocks to the south: bison, pronghorn, Przewalski's horse, moose, reindeer, and Highland and longhorn cattle. Llama, mouflon and aoudad occupy the north-east.
Things to do
Things to do include Train Ride, Wild EncounTOURS and Animal Close-Ups.
Conservation and approach
The zoo is a member of the AZA Species Survival Plan. Its Conservation Fund, started in 2013 and fed by 50 cents per admission and $5 per membership, has given over $250,000 across 16 SSPs, nine population management plans and AZA grants.
