Charles Paddock Zoo and its collection

Charles Paddock Zoo, opened in 1955, is a zoo in Atascadero, United States.

Over 100 animals covering 45 species are kept. An endangered male Malayan tiger, Menderu, was held until its death in 2025.

History

It was begun in 1955 by the county park ranger Charles Paddock inside the county animal shelter, where he rehabilitated wild animals; by 1959 he had more than 125 birds and mammals. The animals moved in 1963 to the present site beside the lake park, and the place was renamed a children's zoo.

Animals and collection

Aviary stock includes roseate spoonbill, scarlet ibis, Inca tern, black-necked stilt, mandarin duck and ringed teal. Parrot Pond keeps scarlet macaw, salmon-crested cockatoo, blue and gold macaw, and double yellow-headed amazon.

Things to do include paddle boating, playground and Live Cams.
