Zoológico de Cali and its collection

Fundación Zoológica de Cali, opened in 1981, is a zoo in Cali, Colombia.

Roughly 2,500 animals of 233 species are kept. The grounds lie inside the municipal woodland beside the río Cali. Teaching, recreation and research schemes there are aimed at Colombian biodiversity.

History

It opened in 1969, during the mayoralty of Marino Rengifo Salcedo, and was then run by the city. After mismanagement had nearly closed it, a non-profit foundation took charge on 1 October 1981.

Animals and collection

A Galápagos tortoise, Carlitos, was given by a founder in a swap that sent lions to Quito's zoo, and died on 29 December 2007 from a broken jaw. The mountain tapirs Inco and Sedona have been resident since 2011, and in the 1980s a female tapir, Amapola, went to San Diego with pacaranas, tamarins and tayras in trade for dromedaries, bears, cockatoos and hornbills.
