Birmingham Zoo — Zoo in Birmingham
Birmingham Zoo and its collection
Birmingham Zoo, opened in 1955, is a zoo in Birmingham, United States.
This is the only AZA-accredited zoo in the state. It holds more than 550 animals of 180 species drawn from six continents.
History
The zoo began as a small menagerie of exotic animals kept at a Southside firehouse. The collection moved first to Magnolia Park, now Brother Bryan Park, and then to Avondale Park. The elephant Miss Fancy was presented by the Birmingham Advertising Club, which had bought her from a circus stranded locally.
Exhibits
A large expansion, Trails of Africa, was announced in 2007. The lorikeet feeding aviary operates only in spring and summer.
