BIAZA WAZA WAZA-WP

Belfast Zoo and its collection

Belfast Zoological Gardens, opened in 1934, is a zoo in Belfast, County Antrim, United Kingdom.

The 55-acre site occupies the north-eastern flank of Cavehill above the Antrim Road and holds more than 1,200 animals across 140 species. With over 300,000 visitors a year, it is among the region's leading paid attractions.

History

The zoo opened in 1934, making it Ireland's second-oldest behind Dublin Zoo of 1831. Its origins trace to the horse-drawn and steam tram services that carried passengers out to Whitewell and Glengormley, a line taken over in 1911 by Belfast Corporation, now the city council.

Exhibits

An on-site farm keeps pygmy goats, Shetland ponies, miniature donkeys, rabbits and Norfolk Grey chickens.
