Aquarium Finisterrae and its collection

Aquarium Finisterrae, opened in 1999, is an aquarium in A Coruña, Spain.

It stands on the seafront promenade between the Domus and the Tower of Hercules, which is visible from the site, and is grouped with the Domus and the Casa de las Ciencias. Its outdoor pools are connected to the Atlantic and rise and fall with the tides. The stated aim is to spread knowledge of the ocean and encourage positive attitudes towards water environments.

History

The city council set it up while Francisco Vázquez Vázquez was mayor, working from a museum plan by Ramón Núñez Centella, who went on to direct it until 2008. It opened on 5 June 1999. A bid in 2003 to turn it into a national museum failed, and it stayed municipal.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include Phoca vitulina, quenllas, corvinas, seriolas and douradas.

Exhibits

Its exhibits include SALA ISABEL CASTELO, SALA MAREMAGNUM, SALA HUMBOLDT, CORREDOR LÓPEZ SEOANE and SALA NAUTILUS.
