Aquarium du Québec and its collection

Aquarium du Quebec, opened in 1959, is an aquarium in Québec, Canada.

The 16-hectare site holds over 10,000 animals of more than 300 species.

History

Its origins lie in 1953, when the ichthyologist Dr Vladykov persuaded the deputy fisheries minister, Arthur Labrie, to secure a Canadian National Railway site near the Quebec Bridge. The province bought the land in 1954 and building work started in 1955.

Animals and collection

Animals on show include polar bears, seals, leopard sharks, giant Pacific octopuses and jellyfish.

Exhibits

The Awesome Ocean is the principal indoor draw, while the outdoor displays include a wetlands ecosystem exhibit.

• The terrace of Alizé restaurant is also open to picnickers.
• The Aquarium du Québec is certified by Kéroul. Our facilities are accessible to people with restricted physical ability.
• The use of a baby carrier or umbrella stroller is recommended to facilitate the circulation of visitors in the paths and pavilions of the Aquarium. All sectors are accessible with this equipment, with the exception of the Deep Sea Pavilion during peak visitor periods.
• Note that easily recognizable assistance dogs and guide dogs are allowed without restriction in all buildings and other locations accessible to visitors.
