Albuquerque Aquarium

Albuquerque Aquarium and its collection

Albuquerque Aquarium, opened in 1996, is an aquarium in Albuquerque, United States.

Its saltwater displays span the surf zone, shallows, reefs, and open and deep ocean, with species drawn from the Gulf of Mexico and the South Pacific.

Exhibits

The route begins at a fountain standing for the headwaters of the river, and the first tanks hold river fish, including kinds that no longer live in it. It ends at a 285,000-gallon saltwater tank of open-ocean species from the Gulf of Mexico. The window onto the shark tank is 38 ft wide, 9 ft high and 8 inches thick.

Conservation and approach

It operates a facility for conserving Rio Grande fish, with work on breeding the Rio Grande silvery minnow and on the Socorro isopod. Three blacktip shark pups born there in January 2008 were the first captive birth logged for the species.
