Adelaide Zoo
Adelaide Zoo and its collection
Adelaide Zoo, opened in 1883, is a zoo in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
The grounds cover eight hectares of parkland immediately north of the city centre. The newest enclosures form the second phase of the South-East Asia area, called Immersion, where Sumatran tigers and orangutans are seen at close range. The Envirodome, a hands-on visitor space, shares the former Ape Block with the Education Centre.
History
Doors opened on 23 May 1883 on 6.5 hectares granted by the government, the work of the South Australian Acclimatization and Zoological Society. In 1937 George VI granted the society a royal charter, and it was renamed the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia. In 1990 the collection stood at 1,300 animals of 282 species.

Stock in 2023 ran to more than 2,500 animals across 250 species. Both giant and red pandas are kept, on the Bamboo Forest Trail.
