Is Xcaret Worth It? An Honest Look for Wildlife Lovers and Families
Yes, if you will use the whole day. Xcaret, 6 km from Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya coast of Mexico, is open from 8:30am to 10pm, and a standard ticket gets you in to see two jaguars, a coral reef aquarium, a butterfly garden, monkeys, flamingos, underground rivers and a two-hour evening show. If animals are all you came for, you pay for a lot you will not use, and a three-hour tour of Akumal Monkey Sanctuary costs MX$1,400 instead.
What not to miss
Xcaret sells itself on more than 50 natural and cultural attractions, from underground rivers to an aviary, and it is fair to ask how much of that is wildlife. Quite a lot: the park says that in different sections you will see jaguars, manatees, flamingos, spider monkeys, howler monkeys (saraguatos), bats, deer and tapirs. Grupo Xcaret's conservation work is accredited by ALPZA, the Latin American Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Featured location Grupo Xcaret Playa del Carmen Municipality, Mexico ALPZA Grupo Xcaret, opened in 1991, is a zoo in Mexico. The animals you will see
- Coral Reef Aquarium: more than 150 marine species, including jellyfish, hard and soft corals, colourful fish and seahorses; open 9am to 6pm.
- Butterfly Pavilion: a free-flight area of more than 3,500 square metres and 15 metres high, with more than 1,000 butterflies flying in it.
- Jaguar Island: two jaguars, in a habitat designed to give them shade, resting areas and environmental enrichment; open 8:30am to 5pm.
- Monkey Island: spider monkeys and howler monkeys, both endangered, reached along the jungle trails.
- Sea turtles: turtles of different sizes in natural pools and in habitats with viewing windows. They are part of a programme that cares for turtles until they are big enough to be released into the sea.
- Tapirs: also on the park's own list of animals you will see in its different sections.
One change to know about: the Manatee Lagoon, home to two rescued manatees called Pompom and Nohoch, was listed as closed for maintenance from 11 May until further notice when we checked the park's page in September 2026. If the manatees are your reason for going, check before you book.
Paid extras and the evening show
Closer encounters cost extra. The Stingray Encounter is one: a 45-minute session on the park's Del Río Route. Swim with Dolphins is handled differently: cancellations are made through Delphinus, not Xcaret, so read those terms before you pay.
The evening is the park's other half. As night falls, more than 300 artists perform Xcaret México Espectacular at the Teatro Gran Tlachco, a show that lasts two hours and is included in the standard ticket.
Tickets and saving money
Xcaret Plus adds a buffet lunch to the standard ticket.
Children aged 5 to 11 get 25% off the adult price. Buying online at least seven days ahead gets you 10% off. Grupo Xcaret gives 15% off to those who book 21 days or more ahead, but that discount does not apply to Xcaret Park, so booking more than a week ahead earns you no extra online discount here.
You may not bring food or drinks into the park, so budget for meals or choose Plus. Your ticket includes a weather guarantee and is good for one year from purchase, but date changes must be made at least 24 hours before your visit.
Getting there for less
Xcaret is 6 km from Playa del Carmen, about 15 minutes away, and 74 km south of Cancun International Airport, about an hour's drive. The park puts a one-way taxi at US$80-100 from Cancun and about US$15 from Playa del Carmen. Buses run from Cancun bus station and from Playa del Carmen's main bus station, and from the roadside entrance a free folkloric bus called the Despeinado takes you to the park gate every half hour. Parking is free if you drive.
Pack your passport. It is the only ID the park accepts for entry, and it must be the physical document, not a digital copy.
With kids and accessibility
Children's World is an area for under-12s with slides, hanging bridges, tunnels and cenotes, open from 9am to 6pm. For young animal lovers, Adventure Kids is a 35-minute paid session in which children snorkel near baby rays, at 11am, 1pm or 3pm.
Most of the park is wheelchair accessible. Xcaret rents single strollers for US$24.95, double strollers for US$34.95 and wheelchairs for US$24.95, each plus a deposit. Only sunscreen containing titanium oxide and zinc oxide may be used in the park, so buy a mineral one before you arrive.
Best time to visit
The park opens every day, holidays included, so the weather matters more than the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November and peaks on 10 September, and Playa del Carmen gets most of its rain between June and November. That is when the weather guarantee on your ticket earns its keep.
School holidays are when Mexican families have time for a day out. In the 2026-27 school year, schools break from 21 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 and from 22 March to 3 April 2027.
Other wildlife nearby
If you want animals without the theme park, Akumal Monkey Sanctuary & Rescued Animals is on Camino a Uxuxubi in Akumal, a small beach resort 100 km south of Cancún, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Its Monkey Sanctuary Tour lasts about three hours, including 30 minutes for photos and the shop, and costs MX$1,400 for ages 12 and over and MX$1,000 for children aged 5-11, as of September 2026. Arrive 20 minutes early: latecomers lose the booking without a refund. Many of its animals were rescued by PROFEPA, the Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection, and entrusted to the sanctuary for long-term care. It also runs an educational bonding programme with primates, which it describes this way:
Our Educational Bonding Program with Primates activity is designed to create a conscious and respectful encounter with monkeys who, due to their past experiences (as pets or born into human care), are accustomed to human contact. Their participation is voluntary, never forced
In Akumal Bay itself, snorkellers can swim with endangered green sea turtles that come to feed on the sea grass. And from June to September you can swim with whale sharks off Isla Holbox.
